But what is tinnitus and what causes it? Well, for many sufferers, tinnitus it is an unpleasant condition characterized by a ringing sensation perceived in one or both ears that disturbs their daily life activities and perceptions of wellness...

There are different causes of tinnitus. Subjective tinnitus is most likely caused by etiologies that also lead to otologic anomalies. Noise-induced hearing impairment is a common example of this type. To stop ear ringing, it is advised that people should avoid areas with loud noises such as rock concerts and construction sites. When exposure to noisy areas is unavoidable, one should use earmuffs as protective gear. This is applicable to persons working in factories, construction sites, and those that operate large machines. Ototoxicity of some drugs may also cause tinnitus. Some drugs, including antibiotics, antihypertensives, and tuberculosis drugs have strictly limited doses due to their ototoxic properties. Other drugs though, such as benzodiazepines and sertralines, can cause tinnitus upon sudden withdrawal. Benzodiazepines are used in seizure therapies while sertraline is an antidepressive drug. Aspirin, which is a common OTC drug, can also induce tinnitus. Physicians should be consulted when OTC drugs to prevent reaching unhealthy thresholds and to stop ear ringing.

In cases of objective tinnitus, or the type most probably caused by structural physiologic anomalies, medical treatments is likely to be used to stop ear ringing. Cerumen plug, for example, causes tinnitus as the earwax plugs the auditory canal. Extraction of the plug can be done in clinics. In some specialized institutions, Gamma Knife Radio Surgery is used. In addition, neurostimulators are given to certain patients with carefully defined causes of tinnitus.

The introduction of auditory stimuli can also stop ear ringing. Notched music therapy or auditory desimulation therapy utilizes a person’s natural musical preference, as the tones reach a frequency equal to that of the ringing perceived. In other institutions, low-pitched sound therapy and music therapy are used, which use the same mechanism (ie. distracting sounds).

Of course, the best treatment for those who are not yet affected with tinnitus is preventive care. Avoid the causes to avoid the disease.
